Is it possible to get ranked for local search without citations?

  Skye Lans: I run a consulting business and am having trouble getting listed in the search engines for my industry along with the city name of where I live. I understand for local search you need a few things including citations ;with directories. ;I do have a google local business citation but don't want to add more citations because I work out of my house. Is it possible to get ranked ;for ;local search without citations? ; I have done most of the other things such as H1 tags, city / state / zip on each page and still not luck ranking.

  Tony Wang: You definitely need citations. If you home office, your Google + page will not show your address, you have to check the right setting. However, other directories may not let you hide your address, just depends on how important it is for you to hide it vs. how visible you want your business to be.

  Promoz SEO: Citation is very important for local SEO. This is the signal Google used to decide how much popular and reputed your local business is.
  There are certain business directories which give the option to hide the address but that is not suggested at all. Name Address Phone number of a business must be consistent throughout internet.
  You can try to get local links from sites like local chamber of commerce, events, blogs, vendors, partners, cause etc but citation is must for 7-pack ranking.

  Skye Lans: Thank you very much for the input. ; I live under a homeowners association so I can't have the property be seen as a business all over the web. So I guess the options are rent an office or forget about local search engines as a source of traffic. ; It seems odd that I see totally irrelevant search engines listings after about 40 listings and my website is no where to be found. The site does rank for some other keywords and I'm sure this whole local thing is very upsetting for many people doing consulting trying to make a buck. ; I just read recently the underemployment rate in the US is around 64%.

  atul kumar: Maintaining NAP consistency is very important to get ranked in Local Packs. So You must have to focus on building more and more citations. ;
