Dumb SEO Questions

Interesting new thing on SERP

My friends, I need some help.
I was browsing through different SERPs to check if there is anything new on Google and found this.
Anybody saw this type of anything (check the pic, red underlined) before?
I know they might be using breadcrumb with structured data but unable to find it on the page HTML.
My questions are, is this ethical (silly question but yes, I want to know) to show something like this? Any body successfully did this earlier? If yes, how did you?

  • Edwin Jonk: I wouldn't recommend this because it is hidden content. Take a look at the source and on line 23 you find position:absolute;left:-4000px . Line 23 is also the beginning of the breadcrumb.

The character is unicode and there are many more:

  • Edwin Jonk: ①②③④⑤⓮⓴➊☀
  • PromozSEO: +Edwin Jonk, thanks. Let me check.
  • PromozSEO: Yep, you are right +Edwin Jonk. ;Unethical practices.
  • Edwin Jonk: I don't think it is unethical because it is their own property. ;-)
  • Tony McCreath: I used a little phone icon next to a phone number in my description once :-)
  • PromozSEO: +Edwin Jonk ; I think it's unethical to show something to search engines and something else (or hide) to users.

Though I am not sure about ;unicode, never used it. Will you use unicode on your web project for SEO?
  • Edwin Jonk: Normally I don't use any icons. But like +Tony McCreath I used a phone icon before a phone number.

Keep in mind that utf-8 is an unicode encoder. So I am pretty sure you used it ;-)
  • PromozSEO: OK I didn't have any idea about unicode. Thanks a lot +Edwin Jonk ;and +Tony McCreath ;for the suggestions.
Last thing, is this a good practice to show something like that (red underlined) on breadcrumb ethically (not hiding any part of html)?
The icon definitely can boost the CTR from SERP. What's your opinion?
  • Edwin Jonk: I don't know. On the one hand you stand out on the other hand you lose some space which could be used with something useful.
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: There was a spammer a bit back that would make their breadcrumbs "stars"... made it seem like they were getting a 5 star rating. Lovely idea... totally spam.

Basically you have to be careful in two ways with using random unicodes (even if shown on the page):
    1) Not everyone will be able to see those unicodes (not all are standard)
    2) Google may trust your site less as breadcrumbs are necessarily supposed to be used in that way.
  • PromozSEO: +Micah Fisher-Kirshner ;, thanks for the clear view. I agree with you, these are nothing but spamming and trying to make users fool.
