Does sidebar information in footer have negative SEO implications?

Does putting sidebar information into a footer have negative SEO implications?

I used to use the sidebar to give visual tick lists such as benefits of choosing this company, services offered, professional qualifications and membership, major customers, maybe even a map with the areas covered. (The information is generally covered by the text, but a tick list summary on a coloured background can draw the eye and helps to sell the customer.)

Nowadays, the trend is more for a 1 column site and so I have been putting this information into the footer.

If it is above the address and footer menus (if any), will this information be seen as less useful by Google`s algorithms? (Note - I still format the info in large text with images where relevant and make it look attractive to humans.)?

  • Edwin Jonk: Normally Google is pretty good at picking up boilerplate like footer or sidebar. However if you have little main content you might get a hit by algorithms such as Panda. ;
