What`s the best structure for a Real Estate blog?

Any thoughts on permalink structure for a Real Estate blog?  My site has about 445 pages and those ranking higher are more important than blog posts for me, if that matters.  Thanks in advance for any help?

  • Pau Lica: - For posts: example.com/post-name/;
    - For pages: example.com/page-name/;
    - I usually get rid of the category, so I don't use something like this: example.com/category/post-name/. There are exceptions though;
    - Use hyphens to separate words;
    - Keep permalinks as short as possible and use a keyword inside (if any);
    - If possible, and by this I mean if it doesn't make the URL sound awful, try to remove stop words (e.g. to, and, at, in, etc.). I usually don't remove a stop word like "to" if it's part of a keyword phrase like "How to create backlinks".

    If you ever change a permalink, use a 301 redirect from the old one to the new one, otherwise Google will see it as duplicate content.

    Hope this answer is what you've been looking for.
  • Shayne Kilber: So any time I change the permalink structure under settings I need to do a 301 redirect?

    Yes. From the old one to the new one.
  • Ryan Cramer: I guess I am still a bit old school on this, but before all the CMSs, we used to do all of this by hand.  ;After about 50 files in a directory, there was a bit of server lag, so we would make sure to have good directory structures.  ;

    As Search Engines started coming into play, we found that limiting the links within each directory helped with indexing because of the hierarchical structure.  ;Even now, I've found that having every url at the root level causes problems.  ;You may have already experienced a lag time of Google "seeing" changes to your pages.

    If you have all 445 pages on the root domain, Google is seeing that your site is about 445 things.  ;If you separate the pages/posts into specified directories, indexing is improved.  ;Considering you have a real estate site, separating the pages/posts by city may even give you a boost in those local markets.
