301 redirect question.

Quick redirect question here  - I just moved a site to a new domain, I have 301`d the old site to the new domain, there are probably around 30 or more backlinks pointing to the old site on sites I own or have access to, is it worth going back and changing them to point to the new domain so I get better rankings or will the 301 suffice??

  • David Jones: Quick redirect question here  ;- I just moved a site to a new domain, I have 302'd the old site to the new domain, there are probably around 30 or more backlinks pointing to the old site on sites I own or have access to, is it worth going back and changing them to point to the new domain so I get better rankings or will the 302 suffice?
  • Jim Munro: 302 is for a temporary redirect, David. After a time googlebot might begin to treat it as a permanent redirect but the optimal way is to use a 301.

Apparently full value is not passed by a 301 but also I have heard opinions that googlebot might not value altered links so for me at least that would be a coin toss.
  • Ryan Cramer: Why would you 302 instead of 301? Is the change temporary? If this is a permanent change, you would be better off changing the outside links to point to the new domain, not only so you can get rid of the old domain (301s don't work if the domain no longer exists) but so you can have full passed value to the new domain.
  • Perry Bernard: Hey David, make sure you use the "change of address" feature in Google Webmaster Tools. Google will then also credit the entire link profile to the new address. I recently did this with a move from a .com.au to a .co.nz address. The transition time was just 14 days and at no time did the site lose impressions or traffic. The new address resumed with all rank intact.
  • Jim Munro: Stereo, Ryan. :)

Sorry, I did not see you posting there.
  • David Jones: ahh sorry my bad, it was 301'd, thats what I meant
  • Ryan Cramer: Hey +Jim Munro ;maybe we should alternate days... we seem to say the same thing so much it's scary.

+Perry Bernard ;I've heard people say to use the "change of address" feature, but this is the first time I've hear of someone actually using it!  ;It's a relief to see it worked for you!
  • Perry Bernard: +Ryan Cramer ;happy to say it was bloody brilliant in fact!
  • Klaus Bandisch: 301 only!
  • David Jones: Thanks guys. Perry Bernard, it was actually a subdomain on another site that I moved to a new domain and WMT is saying I cant do the change of address because its just a sub. Looking at the stats for the new domain it looks like all the rankings etc have moved over almost perfectly already anyway which is good. I will look at changing some of the links manually anyway in the near future when I get the time
