Organic traffic has dropped significantly.

Hi team! A former client of the agency i used to work for recently contacted me expressing severe concerns in regards to their organic traffic. They old me that they recently redesigning their website. I don’t have any details as to what degree the website was updated, all I know is that the organic traffic has dropped significantly and the website is no longer showing in the top 10 in the google SERP.

What would be the steps to take here? What are the action items that must be taken now to minimize the damage?

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Sandra?

  • Dave Elliott: Number 1. Check to see if the developer did something silly like leave a no index tag on eveypsge or a disallow all robots.txt file on the site.
  • Ryan Cramer: Probably the most effective action that the client can take is to fire whoever destroyed their placement, revert the website to the version that worked, and hire you back at an increased rate.  ;Sadly, I've had this happen before and both the "old" version was deleted and the new developer charged the client too much and they could no longer afford me (besides the significant loss in revenue due to the drop in placement). Without details of what was changed, it is impossible to give further direction.
  • Jaydee Escobedo: I've seen a couple of redesigns where they actually left out all the meta tags. Check those too. It could be as simple as adding them back.
  • Jim Munro: There is also the possibility that thye have left off the tracking code for some high traffic pages.
  • Ryan Cramer: It could also be changes in the url structure without 301ing everything... so many possibilities! But it reminds me of when an old client's site got redesigned and they switched servers.... I got a good laugh when the site I had developed started showing up as an IP address and outranking the redesign for over 6 months!
  • Jaydee Escobedo: Too many posibilities. I actually had another one where they added flash content and it took them off the 1st page. I change the flash to HTML 5 and got them back to 1st page ranking. Charge them an extra fee though which you might also consider doing for the extra work.
  • Gonzalez Eugenia: The first question that comes to my mind is: Have they redirected the old pages to the new URLs?
