The knowledge graph beyond Freebase?

The knowledge graph beyond Freebase?

Bill Slawski investigates the question:
" “What happens when the world changes in some dramatic fashion, such as a country ceasing to exist, or a well known figure passing away”? "

At Yahoo " editors would be alerted to the change so that they could edit the knowledge base by hand " But Google might do it automatically by fishing in a larger pool according to this patent.

Namely " one important element of this patent is that it looks for mentions of entities in snippets and search results to answer questions "

Second the patent is clear " that sometimes answers aren’t readily available from a source such as Freebase, and when those times come about, sometimes Google uses the Web as a knowledge base, and looks for entities in search results to find those answers. "? Bill Slawski   Thanks, Edwin Jonk There was a lot to this patent, such as the idea of using search related algorithms like topicality and "Query Deserves Freshness" to rank entities for a question answering query, to get a query such as "who is the monarch of Spain" correct.? • Edwin Jonk: I do have a question and I didn't mentioned in the post because I don't really understand it. Namely:
" One important element of this patent is that it looks for mentions of entities in snippets and search results to answer questions "

So this patent suggest Google might use the search snippets that are presented in the SERPS as an signal?
  • Bill Slawski: It doesn't just suggest it, the patent says it.

In some implementations, the system retrieves a number of search results, for example, a list of references to webpages on the Internet. In some implementations, the system retrieves additional, preprocessed information associated each respective webpage of at least some of the search results. In some implementations, the additional information includes, for example, names of people that appear in the webpages. In an example, in order to answer a "who" question, the system compiles names appearing in the first ten search results, as identified in the additional information. The system identifies the most commonly appearing name as the answer, and returns that answer to the user. It will be understood that in some implementations, the system answers questions other than "who" questions using the above-described technique, such as "what" or "where" questions.
