Dumb SEO Questions

Panda penalty and content "below the fold".

I have been reading that content "below the fold" can trigger a Panda penalty.

If you have a site with ads at the top, this makes sense.

What about normal websites, though, when you have a nice large attractive visual at the top (often an image or rotating images, often with both a visual element and a few "slogan-type" words attractively formatted as part of the image.) Customers often like to have a nice large logo and a nice impressive-looking visual at the top to grab the reader`s attention.?

  • Dave Elliott: think this is the' page layout/top heavy  ;update' (from februaryish if memory serves) rather than panda, and is mainly combating lots of adverts at the top of a page rather than anything else. You wont get any penalty if the majority of your content is below the fold, but google want people to find the information straight away, so, if the answer to a question or the searched for information is below the fold on your site you may find yourself ranking lower than a site that gives this information front and centre.
