  • SEMXE: +Carl Harvey ;No. There could be many other reasons why they are ranking at the top. like backlinks, DA, other content, etc.. Don't blindly go for their homepage model... go through every aspect of their website first.
  • I M SEO GUY: There are many factors that are involved in ranking well for a website. On page and off-page optimization, social signals, traffic, theme they are using etc etc.. ;
    We suggest you go for quality backlinks, .edu backlinks than making amendments on your website. ;

    Mark Steenbakkers: A nice big picture or video instantly let the visitors know what the web site is about and gets the message across without reading any text. You only have a few seconds to convince your visitor and a picture can say more than a thousand words.

    The main purpose of your home page is not to rank for a specific keyword, but to welcome your visitor and to help them find the content or services they are looking for. If the rest of your web pages are optimized for your keywords and the individual web pages are centralized around a specific topic the search engines will rank your web site for that topic.

    Most likely one of your other web pages will rank higher for specific search queries, but if you have a local business your home page could also rank for the services you provide.

    In general, your home page should have a clear focus, not too many links, a clear navigation menu, a search box and your contact information.

    And as +I M SEO GUY and +SEMXE mentioned there are many factors involved to get high rankings.
  • I M SEO GUY: Spot on +Mark Steenbakkers. ;
  • Kirsten Hendrikse: Carl, how do you know that the other landing pages on the site have no text? Search engines can't find your keywords (products or services) if you have no text on your site, so I would definitely not remove any text from your site. Instead I would look at the text you already have and tweak that instead.
