Image Filenames

Re image filenames. On a website where images have NOT been named describing the image BUT the alt text does - what thoughts on re-naming the images? Or somewhat of a relatively worthless exercise? FROM OGLE Try to make your filename a good description of the subject matter of the image. For example, my-new-black-kitten.jpg is a lot more informative than IMG00023.JPG. BUT - what about `after the event`?

  • Alan Bleiweiss: It`s a minor signal that needs to avoid redundancy or obnoxiousness, yet it is also helpful for non-SEO reasons especially accessibility.
  • Maria Patterson: I got a little bump up the rankings for an ecommerce site by renaming the image files to be more seo friendly. Named the files as the alt image text which described the products. Was a manual exercise but only a small site. Process in placed for this to happen at source when products uplifted now. Images now rank well too in universal results.
