How does Twitter affect SEO?

How does Twitter affect SEO? I know the links are no follow, but Matt Cutts said in one of his videos that if Google can pick it up, it will. I assume he meant getting past logging in. With that said, I have noticed  Google has picked up a few of my Google Plus posts in SERPs, but Twitter, almost never.

My concern is if repeating tweets is considered spam by the search engines.  Suppose you repeat the same tweet every five days. Over a month`s time, that same tweet is tweeted about 6 times. But in a year, that same tweet is repeated 73 times.  Beyond that, more.?

  • promoz seo: It is all about how much engagements your content is generating on Twitter or other social networking sites. Engagements does not mean how many times you shared your own contents. It means how other users are  ;engaging themselves with your contents, like, shares, comments, follows, mentions, RTs, +1s, likes etc.

    Again who is sharing your content or who is engaging with it matters a lot. A share from an industry influencer surely get you more strong signals than just a normal user.

    So building relationships is the key of success on social media sites.
  • Edwin Jonk: The default setting for tweets is public, meaning that anyone (including bots) can read the tweet. If Googlebot finds a web resource like a tweet with links it will follow the link to discover new web resources. This means that a tweet can help you to get your site indexed. ;

    The nofollow means that no search value will be assigned to the link. ;

    However if you have a problem with indexing, it is faster to use the fetch as Googlebot in GWT [1]

  • AFSB: I have 27K followers, so I get a few clicks every time I tweet. The only problem is, the visitors ; are not targeted and does not engage much.

    Since Twitter gets visited by the bots and follow the links, does Google count the number of times they follow those links? When the tweets repeated gets to a certain number, do they penalize for spam?

    I have some evidence that they do, although it is circumstancial. My organic searches started disappearing about a month ago. They returned after I quit those automated, repeating tweets. As my organic searches became healthier, I tweeted again. Again, my organic searches slowly disappeared. I quit the repeating tweets and the organic searches returned again.

    Thanks for the replies. I have researched on this, but it is not discussed ; in detail on the web.
  • Rotimi Orimoloye: That's an interesting discovery +AFSB.
     ;In my opinion, if you " have researched on this, but it is not discussed  ;in detail on the web" then that is a perfect opportunity for a blog post, don't you think? ;

    My suggestion: do a little more research, more tests and analysis, so you can come up with a rich blog post about the matter, which could go a long way in helping the entire SEO/content industry. :)
  • AFSB: Sorry, Rotimi. There are too much I don't know. The real question is if Google penalizes for repeating tweets. By experience, Google will not tell, and I don't know. That is why I asked here.
