Do I need canonical url for unduplicated pages?

Working on a site where there are loads of canonical urls. Problem is the pages designated as such don`t have any duplicates. This is some automated process the developer put in place. Yoast is installed and doesn`t offer any light on where to manage these pages.

  • Loren Baker: Yes, the source of the content should always self refer in case someone tries to jack your site.
  • Dan Thies: Self-canonical is correct. Important. Necessary.
  • Serafeim Kyriakou: Ask the developer to remove this fuctionality it`s worthless.
  • Gerry White: Canonical tags if correctly configured are great, they resolve issues like tracking parameters, case, https duplicate content issues, if they`re good don`t remove them ... what do you see as the problem?
  • Marc Spindel: They are referring to themselves. I assume that`s the incorrect usage.
