  • Eric Bryant: One of my sites is experiencing a decreasing trend in pageviews but an increasing trend in organic search traffic for the same period. What could this mean?
  • Greg Baka: Is your pages per visit (or visitor) decreasing? If so, then either they are finding everything they wanted on the first page they come to (after which they leave your site), or they are taking one look at your page and quickly leaving because they do not see what they were hoping to find.

    I don't find "pageviews" by itself to be all that useful. It's a lot like the old "hits" metric.

    Visitors, and related metrics are better. Is your number of visitors per week increasing or decreasing? Is the average visitor's time on the site increasing or decreasing? Is the sales per visitor increasing or decreasing? Etc...
  • Tony McCreath: It could mean your ranking for irrelevant searches so people visit and find out you don't have what they want.

    Check in Google Webmaster Tools to see what search terms are generating visitors.

    Also double check that the reduction in pageviews per session is related to organic traffic. And check what landing pages have the poor rate. ;
  • Eric Bryant: +Greg Baka Thanks, Greg. Avg. time on page is increasing. Pages / Session stayed flat.
  • Dave Elliott: Alternatively it could be that people are finding the correct page they need straight away and so not having to go to multiple pages to get to the information they require.
  • Ammon Johns: It could mean so many things that the only thing it really means is that you need more data.

    Try to think of all the reasons this could happen, and then test or hunt for evidence to support or reject each theory.
