Markup/schema for Sitelinks in SERPs

Hi all,

I have a question for everyone. Sitelinks have been around for a while now & I`ve always seen them when the search is for a brand`s name.

However, today, when looking at the rankings for one of the campaigns we manage, we noticed there were sitelinks in the number #1 & #2 positions in Google (Australia) for the search term "Dance Costumes".

Whilst both the companies have Dance Costumes in their title, so do all the other results & so I don`t see why it warrants the sites to be relevant via their brand name.

Firstly, has anyone seen this before (screenshot attached)?
And secondly, is there markup/schema that allows you to do this (none that I know of)

  • Lawrence Snow: From Google: ;

    "Sitelinks

    We only show sitelinks for results when we think they'll be useful to the user. If the structure of your site doesn't allow our algorithms to find good sitelinks, or we don't think that the sitelinks for your site are relevant for the user's query, we won't show them.

    At the moment, sitelinks are automated. We're always working to improve our sitelinks algorithms, and we may incorporate webmaster input in the future. There are best practices you can follow, however, to improve the quality of your sitelinks. For example, for your site's internal links, make sure you use anchor text and alt text that's informative, compact, and avoids repetition."

    Thanks for the response, I did see that on the webmaster tools website, I guess Google has determined those two sites' sitelinks as relevant information.
  • Lawrence Snow: I don't see the relevancy in the site titles for for those links, so perhaps in the pages content or markup is relevant to the search query and a whole host of other algorithm inputs. You would know better than I :)  ;If you find any further info please share. ;

    Haha cheers, it's still a little bit of a mystery to me how Google fully determine when/what sitelinks to be shown.

    I did have a look through the sites & didn't see any kind of markup/schema code.

    I have put the question in alternate groups & the general consensus is, it's due to (at a top leve):
    - the clear structure of the site
    - the relevancy to the term
    - the authority of the individual pages
  • Dmitry Grunt: I can suggest, google makes site links from main menu (most clickable menu items), and pages with many internal links (not in menu but from breadcrumbs for example). Good site structure often gives nice site links in serp (but not always).
