Dumb SEO Questions

Is Wordpress better than any other CMS for SEO?

So after the Penguin changes dropped my page ranking from #1 on page one to page two of Google, I have tried numerous things to get my ranking back where it was. I was told, get rid of Joomla and build a word press site because I was told it would significantly help my page ranking. Truth be told, my ranking dropped again. I realize that SEO takes time and doesn`t happen overnight but I`m not seeing the results I think I should be. This SEO stuff has me pulling my hair out. Every time I turn around I hear of changes happening in Google that nobody seems to understand. I am very confused to say the least. My biggest complaint is that everyone I talk with has a different answer on what to do. Looking for help and advice on what to do, all is appreciated. – Thank you.

  • Russell Matson: Seo is hard. Your experience in dealing with multiple Seo people and getting different answers is probably the norm.
  • Matthew Scott: I understand where you're coming from. I'm a small business owner that's also been a bit battered by Google. What I've noticed in regards to my own SERPs is that while I used to have several keywords in the top 3 with several others above the fold, that I'm now desperately trying to hold on to page 1 rankings (8-10). While this is always an uncomfortable position, the reason I've seen my rankings slide are due to Wikipedia, Britannica, dictionary sites, .edu, and social sites making there way up the rankings. I would see what type of sites are now out performing yours. If it's one or a few of the above, then I think you don't count those as Google has given them priority.

I feel your frustration but I don't think you'll find a good answer. My recommendation is therapeutic. When you're at the point where you're ready to pull out your hair... take a break for a few days, indulge in Bing, and do whatever you do to unwind. I noticed that when I was at that point that I was beginning to make bad decisions.

Here's what my team and I've decided to do for 2013. Take it with a grain of salt.

    1) Post a minimum of 15 blogs a month with great content surrounded with keywords (companies that post 20x a month on average get 5x more the traffic)

    2) Solicit both Google + and Facebook Likes from happy customers. We think that Google will continue to weigh these and other social votes of confidence like they've done with back links.

    3) Become active on social sites (Facebook, Google +, Twitter and Instagram)

    4) Refocus on image search results. This is another great avenue to get traffic.

    5) Add one YouTube video every two months to aid in video results
