Is it white hat to use friends/family to claim Local Addresses?

#googleplaces
Hi all, your favourite carpet cleaner here! I have 2 related Google Places questions (again!)

I currently am listed in Google places searches for my local area (the location of my office), however we are a mobile business and I would very much like to list in places for other areas I service.  I was under the impression if I circled a service area on my old Google local listing, my reach would eventually spread, but in 2 years it hasn`t. Thanks to +Tim Capper and +Justin Y  I am waiting for my postcard to arrive so I can verify my address for my new Places for business page and migrate my old local listing, once that happens I will chase up reviews from customers.  I have added pages to my website with geographical titles and unique content (thanks again +Tim Capper ) I have added my address to the footer of my website, I have listed in good quality business listings and am always looking for ways to link to other local businesses/organisiations.  I am wondering what else I can do? Is it just a matter of time and patience?

Recently I noticed quite a few of my competition carpet cleaners seem to rank in many different places searches and they have different addresses listed for their business.  These addresses seem to be residential addresses and the businesses are not franchised.  I believe they have listed their businesses at friends/family addresses so they can claim the top positions in the places searches - is this white hat?

  • W.E. Jonk: I guess that those residential business places are closed. So if the open hours don't match I guess you could report them. To be honest I don't favour reporting competitors (or sending a spam report) but if nothing else helps then it might be only thing you can do for your business...
