Dumb SEO Questions

Is there a safe way to use old domain names?

Using old domain names
By old here I mean a domain name that has been previously registered but has been allowed to expire and is available for registration again.
Now, assuming that the name matches the business requirements, there are two options to this I believe.
Option 1 : It may already have page rank and incoming links as a result of having been registered before. That is a potential benefit.
Option 2 : It may have built a previous reputation based on dubious SEO techniques with the aftermath still lingering around. That is a reason to avoid.

My own personal view is to start with a clean slate ie a name that has never been registered before. One that has some history may give an initial boost. Yet the likelihood is that things will crawl out later from the domains previous registration to haunt the web team.

  • Adam Cirlincione: I would do a thorough backlink analysis and then decide from there. The benefits of having domain authority and domain age could very well be worth buying the expired domain!
  • Richard Hearne: Supply is limited, so by restricting yourself to names that have never been registered you may end up with a poor name. This is an area where I think Google should have a simple way for domain owners to reset the entire history and start fresh. But since Google only cares about spammers they wont offer this option.

Link audits wont be 100% accurate BTW.  ;The only way to know for sure if domain hit by Penguin is via analytics, which wont be available in vast majority of cases.
  • Adam Cirlincione: True, however, through a backlink analysis it will be fairly easy to recognize an extreme amount of spammy inbound links which would raise a flag for me anyway. If all the links found are quality, then considering the acquisition would be in order :)
