I have a question concerning the Pretty links plugin for wordpress.

I recently started using this plugin, especially on my squeeze pages.  I feel like it looks less scary to visitors than some long complicated affiliate link.

So instead of
affiliateurl.com/123456790/?t=gHJase324* I use pretty link and make it  myurl.com/bestpageforreaders*

Is this considered bad for SEO?
Any help is appreciated, thanks

YOUR ANSWERS

Selected answers from the Dumb SEO Questions Facebook & G+ community.

  • James Maabadi: Affiliate links (masked or not) should be nofollow so they don't mess with your SEO.
  • Chris M Cloutier: Thanks +James Maabadi ;I didn't know if using no follow would be the answer or not.
  • James Maabadi: Really, it can't mess with your own SEO, but it would be a bonus for the site your linking to. However Google says affiliate links should be nofollow so you do not pass link juice to that site.
  • Jim Munro: All affiliate links are viewed by Googlebot as "commercial" or "advertising" and should be either nofollowed OR at least robots.txt-blocked at some point in the redirection chain to comply with Google guidelines.

    Generally the block is implemented before the landing page by the affiliate network you belong to. If this is the case, you do not need to nofollow.

    Another thing to remember is that a shortened link is yet another redirection and Googlebot has trouble with too many redirects. I think you might hinder the crawling process with too many redirects because your network will already use a number of redirects but I'm looking forward to hearing what our panel has to say about your question.
  • Chris M Cloutier: I'm already starting to understand a little better.  ;But definitely looking forward to hearing from the panel.  ;Thanks for chiming in +Jim Munro ; ;
  • James Maabadi: To me, I wouldn't think all the redirects would matter, because ultimately you don't want those links followed or crawled, by Google bot, just your visitors. As long as it works in your browser and for your visitors.
  • Chris M Cloutier: +James Maabadi ; So, basically you're saying if I nofollow those links then I should be okay.  ;I can shorten, cloak, whatever as long as I'm not passing PR.  ;Is that what you mean?  ;
    thanks for you help
  • James Maabadi: +Chris M Cloutier ;, Yes, that was my understanding.
