I had to shut the store down and I’ve lost all ranking

Hello Everyone - Dumb question incoming…I have an e-commerce store that was ranking 4th page for one set of targeted keywords without any effort to rank. I had to shut the store down and I’ve lost all ranking it seems since it’s come back online. I’m ready to invest some time in getting my ranking back and even higher than 4th page. I’m overwhelmed about what to do next and presume I’m overthinking it. As long as my site (Shopify) is properly organised should I just try and gather as many quality backlinks as possible? Apologies for what I presume may be a simple question but being self taught in all this it can be confusing to know if I’m overthinking or not.

  • Christine Hansen: Group expertDo an audit first - collect as much data as you can - write out a list of tasks to do and go from there. To collect data, you can use Google Search Console, GA, Lighthouse, Screaming Frog etc. Lotsa audit lists out there to follow.

  • Sal Isme: Just forget backlinks for a moment. You mentioned organisation, that’s really important and your internal links create that organisation - not just your menus (which are also internal links). You content and on page optimisation is also really important, as is filling content gaps and creating topic clusters. Backlinks can be really harmful if done wrong, so please don’t focus on that as a solution. There’s so much that goes into SEO, I’m afraid its not as simple as getting some backlinks.
