Dumb SEO Questions

How do you stop content from being diluted?

A few years ago based on the back of stuff being published by Brian Dean and (I think possibly) Glen Allsopp, I dropped my blogging frequency down to avoid watering my content down. Instead, I opted for longer in-depth posts and sent the shorter stuff straight to my list.In all honesty, I`ve taken my eye off the SEO ball because I`ve been so busy but I am seeing my site slide in the rankings and was wondering if this tactic is no longer wise. Or even, was it never really wise? And a follow-up question, if going back to more content is better, then how do you stop content from being diluted? Is it enough to simply link from the smaller posts to cornerstone content that has more depth?

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertGoogle seems to like it when topics are covered completely - which plays to the longer post solution. This can also be accomplished by creating smaller posts that are interconnected and support each other like series of shorter posts that each focus on a specific aspect of something and, together cover a topic completely.

Because the human attention span is going down in spite of Google`s preference for "full coverage" - I prefer topic clustering like this. People can find the aspect they want and hit it fairly quickly or they can deep dive into the more broad subject.

I like to provide topic outlines and ways people can easily know the best order in which to read things, know what`s next, and more easily keep track of where they were if they do it over several days. Depending upon how you do this - it can be done as a header/footer sections to the articles, or creating various faceted taxonomies to group things together.

But... your way works just fine. Google has passage ranking now, so a single article can rank for the topics contained in just one singular section of the post too. So along, wide covering article can rank for the broad subject it covers, but also rank for specific longer tail concepts within it.

  • Josh Levenson: Create content with a purpose in mind. Don`t create a blog post just to create a blog post. This is probably what they were after. And still applies.

  • Michael Martinez: Group expert" was wondering if this tactic is no longer wise. Or even, was it never really wise?"

Wise for some, not for others.

There is no universal SEO strategy that works for everyone.

Content dilution is a nonsense term.

Either you`ve got something new to say or you don`t. If you don`t have anything new to say, the search engine will decide what it wants to do with what you keep saying repeatedly.

  • Boyd Trimmell: If it was my site, I would test to see if the current still strategy works.

I am continuously running test and experiments on my sites to see which performs better. What`s interesting is strategies don`t work equally the same in all target markets or niches.

I run experiments on high performing sites at least twice a year. And on lower performing sides at least monthly. I find I can always make it better.

  • Michael Beasant: If only I knew what you guys are talking about.

What if you take a topic and answer the top 3-5 questions you get asked, with an invitation at the end , for more info contact me etc.

So video, then break it down into article, then posts.

In human speak, not coach speak.

    Just thinking aloud.
