Ethical link building.

Hi guys,
Trying to do some link building for some of our clients. Hitting a brick wall in terms of new ideas on how to get links ethically. I`m trying to avoid things like directory listings and forum postings but it`s hard to constantly create engaging shareable content when you`re managing various different sites. Would be grateful for any hints on how to link build in the post Penguin 3.0 world. Thanks!?
