Do I need to re-submit my sitemap?

Hey Guys, we use Yoast SEO to generate sitemap, which automatically updates when a new post/page is added. In addition to this, is it best practice to also re-submit the sitemap via Google Search Console on a regular basis?

  • Michael Martinez: Submitting the sitemap may speed up the crawling and indexing of the new URLs. Of course, if you redirected the URLs and if the site is crawled frequently then it may not be necessary.

  • Fiifi Otabil: Michael Martinez i believe its crawled frequently

  • Fiifi Otabil: Michael Martinez am also worried about a permanent drop in search ranking. A few blogs says its a bad idea to change your url structure but most of my competitors only have urls like this https://www.website.com/kitchen-appliance

My site is over 3 years old.

    WEBSITE.COMWebsite.comWebsite.com

  • Michael Martinez: Fiifi Otabil I`ve never lost rankings from changing URLs. I don`t know what people did to themselves that they would have lost rankings in the past. Just make sure the old URLs redirect to the new ones.

  • Fiifi Otabil: Michael Martinez ok. Thanks

  • Richard Hearne: I would never change URLs without a very good reason. It always introduces risk imo, and unless there is an obvious and known benefit to changing URLs wholesale, I`d say it`s rarely worth doing. YMMV.

  • Fiifi Otabil: Richard Hearne ok thanks. But what of taking out just the parent categories. Example: www.website.com/product-category/kitchen/cooker/gas-cooker

    This now becomes Www.website.com/product-category/gas-cooker

    WEBSITE.COMWebsite.comWebsite.com

  • Casey Markee: Fiifi it would be an extremely poor SEO practice to change your URLs without an incredibly compelling reason.

Google is REALLY clear about this. Don`t do it if you don`t have too, and the advice is YEARS old:

And on the contrary, I have DOZENS of clients who changed URLs and had ranking drops. Even with redirects.

Your basically wiping out all the earned history of your URLs sitewide. So yes, that`s a valid concern.

SEROUNDTABLE.COMGoogle: Avoid Change URLs Unless You Really Have ToGoogle: Avoid Change URLs Unless You Really Have To

  • Fiifi Otabil: Casey Markee what of removing just the parent slug from the url?

  • Casey Markee: Fiifi that`s "changing the entire URL structure."

    It`s a waste of time.
