Dumb SEO Questions

We had a contract with an SEO company and the search results were not bad until it got punished by the Panda / Penguin updates.

Hi all!

I am so desperate with the SEO of my websites that I hardly know where to start anymore.

I had a first website www dot giftsngadgets dot co dot za which was doing quite well.
We had a contract with an SEO company and the search results were not bad until it got punished by the Panda / Penguin updates with the result that the site basically completely disappeared from all Search Results.

As we are completely web based, this situation resulted into the daunting fact that we now had to get ALL our revenue from Google Adwords. Although our Adword campaigns are doing quite well and although our turnover has gone up, the ongoing cost is putting a lot of pressure on our marketing budget.

On top of that, I had to spend a lot of money trying to get the site going again.
I hired an SEO company (I picked the number one SEO company(!!!) from the local search results at that time because I thought it was proof that they were good)  only to hear after 6 months and a pile of money  that the site was `sand-boxed" (whatever that may be), and that it was unlikely to ever perform well again.

So I decided to keep using the `sandboxed’ site for my Adword campaigns while we started another website www dot gifts-n-gadgets dot co dot za.
With yet again another web/seo  company we started building the site from scratch in WP and we were going to build the site with SEO in mind!
We started adding the products and in the mean time we  started posting on the blog in the site.
I had some posts written by "content writers", but they were so full of generalizations and high flying marketing terms that it was ridiculous. I came to the conclusion that one can only write sensible about a subject if you really know the subject so all came back to me. Being a small business owner, spending days on writing post, not even being a native English speaker, is a hell of a task to be added to an already hectic diary.
After 3 months however, I had the feeling that the new site was not coming on as should be and as I was paying for. The functionality of the site was lacking, images were incorrectly cropped, the layout was poor.
We had a serious Skype meeting where I politely but firmly explained my concerns. And we came to an agreement that all was going to be solved within the next two months. And in the mean time I got emails and Skype messages, like ‘ the site is scoring this and that on this and that keyword” and so on.
After another 3 months however the basics of the site were still not all sorted out, I got bills for SEO services but did not get any real proof of any work done so I canceled the agreement as I had enough of it.

The result now hover is, that I have a site that is performing well on a few keywords but that is basically it.
As this whole exercise was never “planned’ the sum of all costs has put a huge burden on our company.
I am now left with very limited budget to really get this new website going AND D KNOWS WE REALLY NEED THIS TO HAPPEN! I also do not trust a single SEO company anymore

Yes, I am at my wits end and this thanks to 4 different SEO companies who all were supposed to be decent companies with good references.
So my question is, where do I go from here? Has anyone here in the community been in the same position and how did you get out of this bloody mess.
Some REAL help would be very much appreciated.

  • Andy Wigglesworth: I managed to look around a few pages until -

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /home/giftsnga/public_html/wp-content/themes/self-titled/includes/theme-options.php on line 321
  • Federico Sasso: On the top of the problem ;+Andy Wigglesworth ;reported for your new website, I have to add your site along with the error message returns an HTTP response code "200 OK".
    A "fatal error" like that should return an HTTP status code "500 Internal Server Error", or the search engine would index the error content.
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Thank you +Andy Wigglesworth ; and +Federico Sasso ;

    Not sure what happened just now but we are looking into it ;
    I will update here as soon as the site is back on.

    Thanks again for responding so quickly!

  • Dmitry Grunt: If you dont work with your site - don't post new intresting content, new sales, new products and so on, its very hard for seo company to put your site to the top. ;
    As seo i think 70-80% of our success is site quality and inner optimisation.
  • Gifts and Gadgets: I am well aware of that +Dmitry Grunt ;
    That's why I have been writing blog posts, ;
    we have been adding fresh content on a daily basis and yet the site is well ... i feel like it all has been a waste of time and money now.
  • Dmitry Grunt: +Gifts and Gadgets ;l looked at you site ;http://www.giftsngadgets.co.za.
     ;It need basic optimisation, cant find working sitemap in robots, www and / not redirected. 22 000 pages in index, do you realy have 20 000 products? ;

    So if you naturally have problems with this site.
  • Greg Mee: I think you're "Dear Customer" notice is a killer. That needs to be fixed quickly or you'll just send people to Amazon.

    Is there any way you can put more content on your product pages? Maybe hire an intern to do the work? Any description/info you can add will help.
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Hi ;+Greg Mee ;, ;
    Yeah, I know what you mean, but this is a bullet we have to bite every year when we get new price lists from our suppliers.
    We try to process everything as soon as possible but there's just too many products for a very small team to get them updated in a few days.
    I do appreciate the feedback though and will definitely will keep it in mind.
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Thanks ;+Dmitry Grunt ;,

    I will get the sitemap issue sorted out ;
    but the 2 other things you mention are not clear to me so if you don't mind to elaborate: ;

    www and / not redirected > not sure what you mean by this

    do you really have 20 000 products? No! We have about 2200 products so including the categories, tag pages and blog posts I would say all in all 2500 pages? ;

    Looking forward to your feedback ;

    Edwin ;
  • Andy Wigglesworth: On the newer site, it really needs fixing as soon as possible...

    There must be a plugin issue because when I view the source there is an incredible amount of junk -

    On the 'New Arrivals page' it is currently loading all these (look on the page analysis tab):

    CSS ;*92*
    Script ;*82*
    Image ;*57*
    HTML ;*37*
    Other ;*5*

    http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/b9UFf/http://www.gifts-n-gadgets.co.za/category/new-arrivals/

    The home page comes out even worse:

    CSS ;*92*
    Script ;*82*
    Image ;*57*
    HTML ;*37*
    Other ;*5*
    Image ;*123*
    CSS ;*92*
    Script ;*75*
    HTML ;*9*
    Other ;*6*

    http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/bBEv7f/http://www.gifts-n-gadgets.co.za/

    Take a look at what plugins you have activated - get rid of the ones you don't need.
  • Greg Mee: +Gifts and Gadgets
    "...every year when we get new price lists from our suppliers."

    Gotta be some way to drop the price lists into a database. Then some code can query the db and always display correct info.
  • Gifts and Gadgets: +Greg Mee ;We are currently thinking of taking of the pricing all together Greg.
    Since we nearly never sell the "raw' product but 99% of are sales are customized orders and they need to be quoted anyway.
    So I think it would make sense just taking everyting off and removing that red flag >Dear customers> then as well.
    Thank you for the tip
    Edwin  ;
  • Greg Mee: +Gifts and Gadgets
    "99% of are sales are customized orders..."

    Oh, I get it. Sorry. Your "Dear Customer" note makes a lot more sense now. So they use the "get a quote" form and can get a quick reply with the total price? Should your "Dear Customer" not point to that?

    Anyway, SEO...

    Do you have a Google Webmaster account? Either your own or through your web guys? That will point out serious errors, plus G actually offers SEO advice.
  • Greg Mee: +Gifts and Gadgets
    Google offers it's own SEO guide. Might be worthwhile to check it out: https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/www.google.com/en/us/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Txs +Greg Mee ;!
  • Nathan Johnston: FYI, your sitemaps are generating error messages which translates into the G not being able to crawl them
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Thanks +Nathan Johnston ;, ;

    This site is the first  ;larger site I have done with WordPress and it has been giving me issues from the beginning till the end.
    I did some other projects with Joomla before and I NEVER experienced anything like this with these websites.
    We are currently discussing to drop the WP site completely and to replace it with a Joomla site.
  • Andy Wigglesworth: A large wordpress site can be a struggle if you are relying on a lot of plugins and shared hosting (no idea on what hosting you are using)...

    But it looks like you are using a lot of plugins, which is why I asked earlier if you can get rid of some? - especially the one thats causing you the issue of what I pointed out earlier, it looks to be the 'backup' one you have installed....
  • Gifts and Gadgets: Hi, +Andy Wigglesworth ;, ;

    The site runs on a VPS with plenty of resources.
    But we are currently fixing up the necessary but like I said, I just about had it with this site and WP and I am going to start preparing the replacement with a Joomla site. (I more or less know my way around in Joomla) ;
    I will then subscribe to Upcity.com and I try to figure out my SEO myself.
    I have used 4 SEO companies, paid a huge amount of money (in terms of being a small, relatively young business) and had ZERO results. ;
    I have decided to take this in my own hands, (it seems that using Upcity, you learn SEO as you go) as I now come to the consideration that I have been outsourcing a keystone of my company without having a clue on what is happening there.
    The results have learned me my lesson and I have learned it the hard way.
  • Abhishek Yadav: Hey ,,, whats you email id... i have some suggestion for your site
