Undo the Move Domain tool

A few years back, I changed domains for my site. At that time, I used the Move Domain tool in Google Webmaster Tools to redirect traffic/links from the original domain to the new one.
Question: Can I change it back and separate the 2 domains so that I can re-deploy the original on a related topic/service? And if I were to do so, would it be a smart or not-so-smart SEO move?

  • James Maabadi: Surely Google doesn't limit you to never use a moved domain again. Do you think any 'juice' was passed from the old to the new when you moved it? Do you think there's enough new seo to support the rankings if the old 'juice' was removed?
  • Randy Milanovic: You'd think Google would not restrict reuse James. Both domains have Juice and the live site ranks incredibly well. (600+ unique referring domains). The spin off of the original domain would simply be a division, so still in alignment content-wise.
  • James Maabadi: I've been contemplating this myself (getting a new domain) and not sure the route to go. ;
  • Randy Milanovic: Changing (moving) originally wasn't difficult. Just followed Google Webmaster Tools instructions. Took roughly 6 weeks to sync up links.

  • Randy Milanovic: So the only thing to be aware of is splitting links (back to the original domain), so not a problem. Thank you.
