They have RUINED our income

I`m a cartoonist, and my main competitor is cartoonstock - a UK company which sells cartoons for a couple of dollars. They have RUINED our income. I do a lot of food cartoons, and I saw that my webiste came up in Console for the words gastronomie Cartoons (as a search - no one clicked). I have never used that word, but I guess people are looking for it.I get NO TRAFFIC - maybe 2 clicks a day!! But anyway, I try to use only 1 or 2 keywords in a post for SEO so Google doesn`t think I`m low quality trash. But LOOK at all the keywords cartoonstock uses! Why are stores like them not penalized, but I am for using lots of keywords? Please help!!

  • Donna Bea: I`ll put my own website here, if you want to compare: https://donnabarstow.com/category/restaurant-cartoons/

DONNABARSTOW.COMRestaurant Cartoons! > Donna Barstow CartoonsRestaurant Cartoons! > Donna Barstow Cartoons

  • Mike Calder: Donna Bea just a comment about your cartoons. Have you thought about teaming up with a branded operation in the hospitality sector? Creating some exclusive cartoons for the leading groups would raise your profile.

  • Mike Calder: Donna Bea or as this competitor in the UK already does, license your images through them for personal or business usage.

Google doesn`t require that you not use a lot of query terms in your Web copy. What they don`t want to see is what THEY consider to be "keyword stuffing", which typically looks like this:

    keyword 1keyword 2keyword 3keyword 4keyword 5keyword 6keyword 7

Alternatively, they also consider something like this to be keyword stuffing:

------------------------Here is some bland text MONEY KEYWORD that takes up space on a page MONEY KEYWORD and it generally looks MONEY KEYWORD like a standard piece of text except for MONEY KEYWORD.------------------------

A normal Web page with hundreds or thousands of words of text can often appear in search results for dozens, even hundreds of natural queries. There`s nothing to be concerned about when that happens. The more the merrier. It means the search engine deems your content to be relevant to many different searches.

  • Donna Bea: But Michael, they don`t even add any text. They just dribble 15 or 20 keywords in a row and leave it! Of course, they already have great traffic, I`m sure, whereas I have none. But I would like to compete a little better.

  • Cambridge Jenkins IV: Donna Bea you gotta consider specifically what kind of site that is also...

Those types of sites are allowed to do stuff like that.

It`s all a matter of perspective

  • Tim Capper: Group expertBut they have a lot of cartoons - which would satisfy the query for cartoons.

Look at hotels - when someone is searching hotels - google shows them sites with a lot of hotels - not single site hotel

So in a sense Google is showing the site that would cover this query for cartoons.

What is your site and perhaps we could offer some ideas as how you could compete better.

  • Donna Bea: Tim Capper I linked in the first comment. Good point about showing a million cartoons instead of my single ones...sigh.

  • Tim Capper: Group expertOkay My take on this quick:

    1. Unlike cartoon stock - when I click through to cartoon - there is no Buy on page - I have to click on - Buy Cartoon - page.

This could be a factor as to how G is viewing this site.

    2. Are you setting Primary Categories? - the first restaurant cartoon I click on is displaying the page on - Psych Cartoons - cat

    3. This could be more focussed:

Restaurant Cartoons! > Donna Barstow Cartoons

Restaurant Cartoons - Buy Cartoons - Donna Barstow Cartoons

Restaurant Cartoons available to buy, display & use restaurant cartoons from Donna Barstow Cartoons

    4. Actual cartoon pages - linking to some very random sites + you dont use - restaurant cartoon in link back to category - here

    Re visit interlinking

Also the titles on these page could be more focussed.

Slow Wait Staff, Slow Tips - Restaurant Cartoon - Donna Barstow Cartoons

Slow wait staff results in slow tips cartoon available to buy, licence from Donna Barstow Cartoons

  • Donna Bea: Tim Capper Great help, Tim!! I can work on all of this - will copy. But I don`t understand #4: "+ you dont use - restaurant cartoon in link back to category - here" Are you saying I should have a link to Restaurant Category with post of each cartoon?

    2d
  • Donna Bea: I do know from reading Yoast that interlinking is important - wasn`t sure best way to do that.

  • Tim Capper: Group expertDonna Bea in that post - you say restaurant cartoons here - you should be linking restaurant cartoons

  • Jason Wells: Donna Bea have you considered running an experiment? Maybe set up a sub page and try and emulate what they do, as they say the best thing to do for SEO is emulate what others are doing to get that spot?

    2d
  • Donna Bea: Jason Wells Great idea! Not sure what you mean by sub page...just do a new post?

  • Jason Wells: Donna Bea you could always start there I guess

  • Sal Isme: A good variation of keywords is greAt, try and talk as naturally about your product as possible. Create blogs talking about your passion and inspiration and link logically. That should help somewhat. There’s quite a bit that goes into SEO so that’s just the tip of the iceberg but content is key.

  • Michael Martinez: Group expertFor what it`s worth, CartoonStock puts a TON of text on their pages. But their design makes it hard for the casual visitor to see it all.

Their indexable text includes page titles and H1 headings as well as the image captions. It looks like they are e…

  • Caroline Mullan Adams: I don`t think they are your competition as such. Find a cartoonist who is very successful at selling cartoons in your price range and copy them
