Dumb SEO Questions

There are several URLs that Google is just refusing to index!

Hi! Can anyone please help me. There are several URLs that Google is just refusing to index! There`s no trend or reason I can spot why Google only refuses to index certain URLs. Some are indexing just fine but some flat out haven`t started indexing at all. All such pages are relevant SEO-optimized pages that have been added to sitemap but Google will just refuse to index no matter what I do! Search Console Coverage report shows some of these URLs are listed as `Discovered, currently not indexed` and some as `Crawled- currently not indexed.` I`ve tried adding more content, changing on-page, submitting for reindexing and even adding internal links to the pages that are not getting indexed. No matter what I do, I can`t get the pages indexed let along bring in organic pages. I`m at my wits ends so really could do with some advice!

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertYou say they are relevant - but relevant to what?

Are there no other pages that serve the same purpose and adequately cover the same search intent? Are they significantly different (and, for example, not just the same service as 10 other pages but changing out the town?)

  • Aakash Raj: They`re item/product pages of a template website. Are there other pages in the internet serving the same purpose. Yes. Are there multiple pages in my website on the same topic. No. Very particular about keyword cannibalization. They`re not significantly different from other template pages of other competitor websites.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertHow many pages do you have currently indexed? Google only goes so deep on sites.

  • Aakash Raj: It`s a relatively small website. It has 100 odd product pages, 3-4 category pages.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertInteresting. I have some other ideas - but we could play this game for weeks if I`m just guessing and not seeing the actual site.

  • Aakash Raj: The website is slidekit.com I wasn`t sure if sharing the website would be against group rules.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertThere are a few issues here...

First... the categories don`t really make any sense to me. Are the ones in the Templates -> Business category not slide decks?

What makes "Project Management" a "Slide Deck" and not a "Business" template? It just feels random.

Your navigation doesn`t reflect your structure either. You start with "Templates" that has everything in it - then your sub categories are next to it - with no indication that they are sub categories.

And then - on the few of these specific ones I looked at - the descriptions are selling the wrong thing. The nursing one, for example, spends most of the time talking about how great and important nurses are - and all the cool stuff they do. I just don`t see how that`s relevant to the nursing slide template. The first three paragraphs are garbage information.

There are similar things happening with the other ones, too. It`s just blather about the "nurse" or the "season" or "traveling". Your audience is a nursing agency of some sort - you don`t really need to tell them what a nurse is and does, yeah?

  • Aakash Raj: Stockbridge Truslow I`d been revisiting some of the issues you highlighted and they do make sense. But, I can find some of our competitor websites which have done the same without any issues. For eg, slidemodel.com`s navigation and category structure is exactly similar to ours. they have category called template and sub-category pages right next to it without showing heirarchy. Also, some of the urls like:https://www.slidekit.com/template/customer-journey-map/https://www.slidekit.com/.../iceberg-infographic-templates/have decent content addressed to the right audience but refuse to index. Once again, thank you for taking time off to look into the issue.

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expert"Why did you knock down that mailbox?" asked my mother. "Because Tommy did it first, " I replied. "If Tommy jumped off the Empire State Building, would you do that, too?"

The lesson there is - just because someone else is getting away with something, it doesn`t make it a good idea.

As for the stuff that isn`t bad content - Quality is a site level metric. If 50% bad content - Google starts to treat the entire site as if it`s half garbage. Gotta show `em that it`s a good web site - not just a few good pages.

  • Aakash Raj: Navigation wise, It felt logical when I created but now it feels wrong when you asked me. I’ll look into it. I didn’t bother much about the content because nobody actually reads it. People only go through the templates and that’s what matters to them.…

  • Stockbridge Truslow: Group expertGoogle actually reads the content nowadays - so... it`s time to worry about it if you want it to rank - or even to be indexed in the first place. Remember - Google has at a lot more invested in the AI used to read and analyze content than the company who write the AI software you used to create the content.

It`s new because Google started this in December or thereabouts - and every update expands and gets better at picking up on word vectors that don`t make sense.
