Should SEOs broaden their skills, or Specialise?
I agree with this article from Duane Forrester but I think is it focused on the company and not the individual. e.g.
"Largely it means that folks covering more than just SEO will be in greater demand, and those focused solely on SEO may want to consider doing more in a broader range of areas."
True for a company with teams and departments. They should not put all eggs in one basket.
As an individual, I am trying to go the other way. i.e. Specialisation.
Currently I have smaller clients and have to wear all the hats. SEO, Social, Content, Advertising, UX, CRO etc. This makes me an amateur at many things. It also means I have to do things I`m not so passionate about.
I want to specialise. That is, to get even better at the core subject I am most skilled at. Technical SEO.
SEO is not getting simpler. It`s getting a lot more complex. It`s gone from keyword stuffing to semantics and a web of things. Companies that treat SEO as an interns job will not keep up. It will take a specialist.
So hopefully there will be more demand for top notch SEOs, from forward thinking companies.
