SEO questions related to informational content

Hey guys,
I have an SEO related question that has been haunting me since a while and has led me to paralysis by analysis. I will start an affiliate marketing website which will have both informational and commercial content. Good, that is that. My question is related to the informational content and that is: I have the option to make a topic on "X" and I was wondering what you take is on it:
1. Should I do a "The Ultimate Guide to X" in which I add some major keywords such as "how to do X" and "the benefits of X" and "how to make X harder/easier"?
2. Should I do 1 article for every one of the above mentioned keywords. So it would be an article for "how to do X", another one for "the benefits of X" and so on.
I believe that the 1st case will help me get more backlinks, because it would be an article longer than 4000 words (quality). At the same time, I believe that doing the 1st one would water down on my SEO efforts, because I am not concentrating on a more specific topic - and keyword at the same time.
How would you go about this? Would I be able to rank with the first article (the longer one) for the more specific keywords as well? Note that those keywords would only be a "chapter" in the whole article. How would you go about inserting the keywords in the article in that case? Looking forward to hearing from you.
