Old domain with some google penalties?

I`ve appreciated your answers very much so far. One more question: When buying an old domain, with a brandable name and nothing more. How to be sure it doesnt have some google penalties? I`ve checked many websites but every time the answer is different: yes banned, not banned, not sure if banned... how to really be sure?
