Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Sameer Sugwekar on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 05/06/2014).

My site rank anywhere for its namesake.

Looks like my site got hit by the Google gods. I have had the domain for over 10 years and now it does not even rank anywhere for its namesake (ie search for SunMantra and look for SunMantra .com on Google). The webmaster tools  show no errors. My domain is also not on any penalty list. By the way all my pages show up when I do a site:sunmantra .com search. I am stumped. Any guidance will be appreciated.?

  • Jim Munro: I am not an expert, Sameer but while we are waiting for one to appear, please change the alt tag of your logo like this:<img src="http://sunmantra(dot)com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/SunMantraLogo3.png" alt="Sunmantra">

    Please also change the links in your question to disabled links as per this example.

    It looks like you changed the site in February, did you change your content at that time.
  • Sameer Sugwekar: Hi Jim, Thanks for the "Alt" tip. I am using a wordpress template and for some reason the image "alt" text as defined in the media details is not showing up in the logo. Its seem ok in the content images. Will contact the theme creator.
     ;I have modified my links so that they are disabled in the post above. I did change the site in Feb and there certainly was fair bit of content change at that time. I look forward suggestions from your seo group. ;
  • rankyaseoservices: Your site is great with plenty of content, if you have dropped in rankings recently, have you changed URL structure of your website when you changed your site back in Feb, this could be the main reason, if you have then you should consider proper 301. Your backlink profile is not spam, although that being the case, there are couple of backlinks I would actually remove (keep in mind that I am not saying that is the reason, because it isn't). So you can also double check your competitors to see if they have been working on #SEO because at times, it is not Google who drops rankings, but rather others outrank us. Your site is NOT penalized by Google because if it was, you would A: get an email from GWT account, B: your site woun't not be in Google search at all (yours is) therefore, I would strongly encourage you to throw out at least 5 to 10 new unique posts targeting long tailed keywords, and take a look at it through Google, if all is ranked and okay, then don't stress and simply continue producing useful content.
  • Edwin Jonk: It appears that you are using meta refresh instead of a 301. For example consider ;sunmantra(dot)com/seo.html. Although G might view it as a 301 some time in the future, it isn't optimal and I would use a 301.
  • Jim Munro: Good pickup, Mr Jonk. :)
  • Edwin Jonk: My guess is that it is the main issue. Furthermore with the courtesy of +SEMrush ;I did a site audit. I will share the .csv files privately +Sameer Sugwekar ;
  • Sameer Sugwekar: Thanks for looking into this and giving me feedback Ranky and Edwin. Yes I did moved from a partially HTML site to a full WordPress site in Feb. Edwin, I will try your suggestion on using another 301 format. Would love to see the site audit file you have created. Really appreciate your feedback. Will make the changes and let you know if i see any improvements.
  • Sameer Sugwekar: Edwin, thanks a super bunch for those files. Very very insightful. I was able to remove any duplicate pages. Did a server level 301 redirect from my old HTML pages to their corresponding wordpress pages. add lines in robots.txt file to ignore certain directories that were causing duplicate content issues, and thanks to Jim's suggestion also change the alt text of my site logo from "logo" to sunmantra. ... :) Now crossing my fingers and seeing how things go. Best, Sameer
  • Edwin Jonk: I wouldn't use robots.txt for canonicalization. ;
