  • Marty Eigner: I am letting Google write the meta description for some of my pages. Do I have to include <meta name="description" content="" /> in my HTML or can I simply leave the entire line out?
  • Justice NDOU: That will depend on weather or not you would want google to be the only search engine to understand your pages meta description, however in the light of recent developments windows 10 with the integrated bing search engine ....I would include the meta description manually in the pages just to be safe.....
  • Neeraj Pandey: If you want google to pick up the description from your page, ;You don't need to add meta description tag . you should simply leave the entire line out.....
  • Federico Sasso: While the meta tag is option, I would surely suggest you to add them, or you'll hardly be satisfied by the snippet extracted by Google.
  • PromozSEO: I agree with +Federico Sasso, you should always add unique Meta description where you can, otherwise just leave it completely. Missing Meta description is not a semantic error or SEO problem, as per W3C and GWT (Search Appearance --> HTML Improvements).
  • Jon Tromans: There's also the point that if your site is shared on social media the META Description appear with the share. This is a chance to attract clicks to your site.
