Is self canonicalizing every page good for SEO?

Is self canonicalizing every page in a website even the duplicate pages good for seo? or the duplicate pages should be canonicalized to the main page ?

  • Michael Martinez: Duplicate pages should be canonicalized to one version. So if you have this:

    /home page/alpha/duplicate of alpha

    Then both /alpha and /duplicate of alpha should be canonicalized to /alpha.

    /home CAN be canonicalized to itself but it doesn`t really matter in most cases.

  • Helmut Berié: I would say that if possible you should try to avoid duplicate content. If all versions have click paths and the content is shareable you will get links to ask versions. If that if the car Google might index all of them.The canonical is only you preference. Google does with it whatever it wants
