Michael Martinez: It depends on what you expect it to do. Here are some examples of how search engine optimization works quickly:
1. Removing inappropriate "noindex" tags from pages allows the search engines to display them in search results and to follow their links.
2. Removing inappropriate "nofollow" directives from "robots.txt" files allows search engines to crawl pages you want them to find.
3. Rewriting duplicate page titles and meta descriptions helps search engines differentiate non-duplicate content (they use titles and meta descripitons as heuristics for deciding when to collapse similar listings in the search results).
4. Removing inappropriate "nofollow" link attributes from internal links allows search engines to find and understand the relationships between content on a site.
5. Building and submitting either a TXT or XML sitemap helps a search engine discover content on your site.
Other SEO tasks may take more time to produce results, such as:
1. Rewriting old content that is stale and not as useful as it could be;
2. Finding search queries people use that are relevant to a site but for which the site has no useful content;
3. Monitoring search referral traffic patterns over time to learn how seasonal or cyclical traffic looks (so you understand when traffic declines are normal and don`t indicate there is a problem).

In most cases, ads allow achieving some business goals as quickly, as it is possible. If your budget is tight, you need to choose between ads and SEO. But if you have money, SEO is better than ads because it is "organic", it looks more "natural" than ads.

Stephanie Solheim: It does. Sometimes it works better than others. Some niches or industries are better off when they spend their Marketing dollars in other ways like on social media management social media ads pay per click ads or even television and radio.
SEO is not one size fits all but it has an important role in a holistic marketing campaign.
