Maybe I am misunderstanding this article, I am happy to be wrong, but it seems to me that this is a proprietary solution that Google has "gone it alone" on. That`s not useful, Google.
I`m still certain that 2 step authentication is the first thing every user should implement but I`m equally certain that implementing anything that works only on Google is a bad thing.
Do you trust Google? I used to but I don`t any more. What we see today is not the organisation that we all fell in love with.

As far as I know, it`s part of https://fidoalliance.org and not proprietary. There are various manufacturers of keys, such as https://www.yubico.com/2014/10/google-releases-support-fido-u2f-security-key/. Would be useful for things like online banking.?
