  • Claudette Parry: Hi there - after using YOAST on my site for some time I've recently discovered that I am not ranked at all for the keywords I've been using for the past year instead the keywords I am ranked for are odd words like 'comment' or 'subscribe'why would that be? Thanks a mil.
  • Federico Sasso: Sorry if I ask, but how do you know you are ranking for such keywords?

    The reason I'm asking is those single keywords would be challenging to rank for, and do sound like the words you can find in
    "Google Search Console" -> "Google Index" -> "Content Keywords" (a list of words not much related to what your site actually ranks for, its purpose is more to understand whether your site had be hacked with intruder words).

    To check what your site ranks for (apologies if I state the obvious) you should check:
    "Google Search Console" -> "Search Traffic" -> "Search Analytics"
  • Claudette Parry: Thanks you were right! I am a bit confused though! I checked the search console as advised to find the keywords my site is ranking for and they are more relevant thankfully however I've been using YOAST for over a year and was hoping for better results - do you think it's better to hire someone to do it or can the plugin deliver results of the premium package is used. Thanks for seeing me in the right direction.
  • Claudette Parry: Oh and one more question - the keywords I identified are for specific pages which are ranked but the site itself is not ranked what does that suggest to you? Thanks a mil (again) 😊?
  • Federico Sasso: Hi +Claudette Parry ;
    when it comes to ranking, it's a so-called "zero sum game": other people are trying to compete for the same terms, so much depends also on how a good job they are doing. The choices are: be a stronger player (do some competitors analysis to assess them), and/or choose an easier game (i.e. find easier niche keywords to target).

    About specific pages vs "site" to rank:
    There's not such a thing as a "site" to rank for a term (at least for Google, not sure about other search engines): the home page with address / is seen as any other page (almost, it normally has more internal and external links).
    While specific pages have lot of text to sort out a topic, in your site the Home Page has little text (taking apart the snippets from the listed posts); you can probably hone your page title to better target your main keyphrase. The current subtitle is H2, I'd promote it to H1 and - may be - try to change it a little, and demote the current H1s. The welcome text is also a good candidate to craft your message. Keep in mind it's quite normal for a blog to target more keywords with specific pages, and it's likely many of your users would land on an article page. If your site responds to users' needs, it's fine.

    About whether DIY or leverage a professional: it really depends on you, how much time and effort you wish to devote to SEO now and in the future. SEO is an ongoing process; an initial external help may work, it needs maintenance though. Up to you judging costs and benefits.

    Let's hear what the panelists will say.
  • Claudette Parry: Thanks +Federico Sasso I really appreciate your feedback it has made things a bit clearer for me. I'm tempted to go it alone and try and learn as much as possible thanks for the h1 h2 tip by the way 😊?
