I am finding Google totally confusing these days

I am finding Google totally confusing these days. Websites I have spent time with optimising images, page speed, mobile friendly, reviews, social media are all performing worse than they were before i touched them. Sites i have done nothing with not even responsive are now getting more traffic than ever before. Is it possible to do too much or are the new Algorithms just totally screwed messed up?

  • Jim Munro: It's harder to monitor progress than it used to be. I am not an expert but I would pay more attention to the outcomes a page produces rather than where you think it is ranking. Use that for your benchmark but continue to spend a little time making sure that all your ducks are lined up in your favour.
  • Thames Valley Discos: Is it worth going to https? Will that benefit me in the longer term?
  • Jim Munro: I don't think so but I'd like to hear other opinions.
