How to do SEO for musicians and bands?

It`s been a while and I am overdue for a question.

SEO for musicians and bands. How is it different from SEO for other businesses?

I have been thinking about it for a while. Goal of the band is always to sell music, show tickets, merchandise and get overall exposure. How does one correlate that with search engines?

Keep in mind that I am not talking about bands that book wedding gigs in New York or something. That would be easy to optimize.  Is there a way to use SEO to sell merch, music and tickets or can it only happen due to popularity/exposer of the band?  The only way I could think of is to optimize for keywords like "chill music" or "new rock music" and etc.

  • Thomas Hale, Jr.: "can it only happen due to popularity/exposer of the band?"
    Yes, in that a customer has to be aware of and interested in the band first, before they are likely to purchase the music or the merch.

    What analytics data do you have already? Is there already some traffic for queries like "chill music" or "new rock music"? Can you find some of those organic terms in webmaster tools or analytics and optimize for high volume, low rank terms, that actually have some interest from your audience already? ;
  • Ranu Jain: There isn't a much of difference in optimizing a music/ band website. Here are a few optimization tips:

    1) Look for a good domain name which is close to your band name/ main keyword. It will help in making easier for people to find your band online.
    2) Then you need to look at the title of your site. It should include your band name/ targeted keywords.
    3) Every page of website should have the title and meta description tags.
    4) Use Alt and title attributes to describe the pictures on your site so Google knows what's in them.
    5) Include [social media] 'like' buttons on all the pages of your site. Be active on Twitter. Make 2-3 tweets daily.
    6) Post fresh, unique and valuable content on your site (or may be in your blog).
    7) You may also add your lyrics on the website.
    8) Get good and relevant links to your site.
    9) Create Google+ profile and page for your site. Instead of ranking sites simply based on keywords, content, back-links etc go for Author Rank and Verified Authorship. Google pays much more attention to the individual publishing blog posts.
    10) Another way to improve your search ranking is to post YouTube videos that contain keywords in the title. ;
  • Dave Elliott: to be honest i'd assume everyone was searching for b(r)and names rather then anything else. So there isn't much genuine SEO to do (this is one of those, we are now part of inbound marketing type things)

    I'd say its about social media/youtube/video optimisation and making sure that they have a presence on the big song lyrics directories etc(so if someone types in a song lyric they will find the bands name).

    Also, if they are doing a gig, make sure they are on the tickets websites(there tend to be local/nice ones around if they aren't on the ticket master level), make sure they have people blogging/reviewing the gig etc etc. Make sure they are part of any local facebook gig guides/musician networks, blah blah blah.

    In terms of on-page stuff i doubt there is much to do other than making sure the band name is heavily featured and that the user experience is good.
  • Erik Hermeler: Hi Arseniy, I've been in a band for quite a while and optimized our bandpage newpokerface.com. We quit but were a punkrock band, so that's used a lot on our page including the homepage meta title and in different reviews on the review section. ;
    I think SEO for band websites is easy because you can get good quality links from bar-websites,studio websites and music fora. By creating links on media sites by doing interviews, you'll get the best links from different music sites.
    We always have shared our music for free and had contact with people who ran different download blogs in punkrock. We got a lot of links from those websites and by doing that, we were able to tour through France, Germany & Spain because people downloaded our music.
    Make sure you share your content on the available music sites like bandcamp, bandsintown, last.fm for instance
