Does Google penalize long URLs? The site Iâ€™m working on has some really long ones and I wasnâ€™t planning on changing whatâ€™s already thereâ€™s a good reason to.

Stockbridge Truslow: First we need to consider the word "Penalize". That means you have something and then it is taken away. It`s a "penalty" which is defined as: a punishment imposed for breaking a law, rule, or contract.

Just as in sports... you are not penalized for not scoring - you just won`t likely win the game.

So... while it`s safe to say that by definition, there is no "Penalty" for long URLs,

Google has talked about length of URLs though - a general limit of 1, 000 - but even that can be worked around by their systems. And the only place it really comes into play in the ranking thing is when talking about canonicalization.
