Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Niscoveanu Flori on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 12/16/2014).

Am I over optimizing my img alt text?

I am trying to figure it out if I am over optimizing my img alt text.
I have a travel agency so my main topics covers the hotels in my country.

Every hotel have a special page for pictures (between 4 and 10 pictures). For each picture I included the name of the hotel in the alt text.

Let`s say we are talking about Hotel Hilton, my picture alt text goes like this: Hotel Hilton, Hotel Hilton Room, Hotel Hilton Restaurant, Hotel Hilton Pool, Hotel Hilton Reception, etc.

Is this over optimizing or it`s ok because I use only one keyword (even if it`s the same one) per image?

Thanks in advance for the answers and feedback.?

  • ?ukasz Rogala: Definitely over optimized.
  • Niscoveanu Florin: +Łukasz Rogala ;thanks. Will start re-editing :)
  • Toni Anicic: Well if that's a correct description of what's on the picture, I wouldn't call it over optimized. If the "Hotel Hilton Reception" picture really shows the reception of the hotel in question, that's an accurate ALT text for that image. I wouldn't call it over optimized.
  • Niscoveanu Florin: +Toni Anicic ;The description is accurate, but I felt like using the hotel name for every picture + room/reception/pool etc may look "spammy" in google's eyes.
  • Niscoveanu Florin: And I start thinking about it when I saw that for some hotels, the main page where I have the entire hotel description got canibalized by the Picture page.

For each hotel i have like 4 pages:
    1. Hotel Hilton - here I have the hotel description
    2. Pictures - 4 to 10 pictures
    3. Prices - the table with the prices
    4. Special offers - if we have any special offer

Sometimes when a user is searching for Hotel Hilton instead of showing the www.site.com/hotel-hilton I get the www.site.com/hotel-hilton-picture page.

**All the pages are with no social signals or any authority at all as the site don't have too much traffic.
  • ?ukasz Rogala: "Sometimes when a user is searching for Hotel Hilton instead of showing the www.site.com/hotel-hilton I get the www.site.com/hotel-hilton-picture page"
And each photo is on separated URL?
  • Niscoveanu Florin: +Łukasz Rogala ;All the pictures are on the same url (i have an img gallery on the picture page.

Here's my site so you can take a look if you can spare a few moments (the language is Romanian, but you can get the ideea).

    The description page: http://www.vilegia(dot)ro/hotel-belvedere-eforie-nord/
    The picture page: ;http://www.vilegia(dot)ro/hotel-belvedere-eforie-nord-poze/

The search I made was made for "hotel belvedere eforie nord" and I get the second url (the one with the pictures) instead of first one (with the description).
  • Toni Anicic: I'd find a way to serve pictures on the same URL as the main hotel page instead of the separate URL if I were you.
  • Niscoveanu Florin: +Toni Anicic ;The website was built for one -two keywords per landing page and I'm thinking to change it for a "topic" landing page, but I'm not 100% convinced yet.

Do you think it's better to get a single page per hotel with all the needed information like description, pictures, prices and special offers than to have a page for each of them (in terms of chance to rank for "hilton hotel, hilton hotel prices, hilton hotel pictures and hilton hotel special offer)?
