Wanting to change permalink structure

Would you expect any impact changing the permalink structure from domain/category/post to domain/post in a live site? Has anyone done this before?Currently getting 15k-20k traffic a month, wanting to change permalink structure so we can use a Hierarchy plugin that is not compatible with the current permalink structure.

  • Prince Molak: If it`s not broken, don`t touch it. You can implement that in your new posts by using plug-ins such as `` Custom Permalinks``. For old posts, just leave them the way they are or probably change it in batches and then note the effect before going site wide.
  • The-Nomad Sam: nice answer thank you. Im trying to find a way to have parent/child relationship between posts. But the plugin i found wont do it with this structure.
  • The-Nomad Sam: You say Custom Permalinks is a way i can change the permalinks, but not the hierarchy i guess
  • Prince Molak: You can. By using parent and child pages. Aside that, the custom permalink will allow you to add anything to your Permalinks including pages or sub folder
  • The-Nomad Sam: ah i want to create parent/child posts
  • The-Nomad Sam: I have top 10 list articles, I`m writing individual posts that lead off each of the top 10. So, 10 individual posts all linking to the main top 10 list. Does that make sense? The aim is, i want google to see that the List article is the more important one, the individual posts connecting are lesser, but how will google understand this if they are in the same category, interlinking is enough?
  • Michael Martinez: I`ve done it many times. We just implement redirects and move on. We stopped looking for negative consequences years ago. Any time a site goes down in the search results the URL really has nothing to do with it.
