Dumb SEO Questions

Is it better to not submitting XML sitemap at all?

Just read this, If in some case I can`t automate sitemap on the backend( clients are not able to coordinate with Web Dev Tean etc.), will crawler generated sitemap be the second-best options? Is there any legitimate reason to do so( since I know some SEO still do this? Are they just do it for the hack of it or maybe there are some reason behind it ?) Or in this case, it`s better to just not include xml sitemap at all? Let me know your thought or experiences, thank you!

  • Michael Martinez: Any sitemap is better than no sitemap but if you have to build one manually it will be better if you can export a list of published URLs from the client site than to crawl it.

Advantages of exporting published URLs include:

    1) More complete than crawls tend to be
    2) Takes far less time than a crawl on a large site
    3) The crawl itself tends to mess up client analytics
    4) The crawl also ties up 1 or more concurrent TCP connections, which can impact server performance
    5) The crawl also uses CPU capacity, which can impact server performance
    6) The crawl also fills server cache and potentially other caches with data that won`t be used by other visitors, which can impact the user experience
  • Shao Chieh Lo: Thank you so much Michael Martinez! As always, your advice is very convincing and useful :)
  • Shao Chieh Lo: Michael Martinez Can you explain how crawler generated sitemap can be better than no sitemap though? Since everything crawler can find Google bot already find them isn`t it ?
  • Scott Clark: Michael Martinez an incorrect site map is worse than no site map. And plenty are incorrect, especially in the hreflang category
  • Michael Martinez: Sitemaps are just lists of URLs to the search engines. Whatever your crawler finds is not necessarily being crawled and indexed by the search engines.

So if you want to suggest a list of URLs to a search engine for crawling and indexing, a sitemap is a great tool for the job. There is no requirement that the sitemap include every URL on the site and no reason not to be thorough.

It comes down to what you want to suggest to the search engine. Being listed in a sitemap doesn`t guarantee a URL will be crawled or indexed.
  • Clint Butler: His statement, or solution, only applies if you are using a CMS, and it makes sense. However, if you do use a crawler you may find errors before the Google bot does.
  • David Ogletree: Kind of pointless to create a site map using the exact same method Google will spider your site.
  • Michael Martinez: Running a crawler on your site is NOT the exact same thing as letting Google crawl your site.

If you want a sitemap and you cannot export the published URLs from a CMS, then crawling the site is perfectly fine - especially for a new site that hasn`t been fully explored by Google.

Sitemaps are not mandatory but you can build them any way you wish.
