  Michael Martinez: Obsolete in the sense that they don`t accomplish anything? I wouldn`t say that. Many a Website has earned penalties for buying these kinds of links. They can still attract attention from a search engine`s Web spam team.
  
  The best backlinks strategy is to create the kind of content people are likely to link to. Of course, that`s hard to do.
  
  Beyond that, asking a few friends for links is acceptable.
  
  The easiest path is to create really good connectivity between your own content on the same site. Many people restrict their internal linking so much they end up choking older content off from crawl pathways.
  
  Most sites never receive more than a few backlinks. It`s easy for Web marketers to lose sight of that fact because they devote so much time and effort to link building. In a highly competitive vertical, some sites can still do very well with a minimum number of links.
  
  My strategy is to exhaust all other options and opportunities before I worry too much about links. It takes me a while to get to that point.

  Jamie Silk: Not good in terms of backlinks, but it can help as the search engines look at how you are displaying information. If you use different methods/media it can help your site/page be a better authority on the subject compared to a site that just has text and a few images.

  George G.: with a well done infographic or image that represents data you can get a lot of quality backlinks just by posting on reddit and a PR campaign. however, this needs to be well thought and you have to conduct some original research.
  
  posting trivial stuff on spammy sites wont do any good, you should spend your time/money in more productive way.
