International SEO Query

International SEO QueryLet`s say the homepage is domain.com/eu/ this carries domain.com as a canonical tag instead of a self referencing one and domain.com from canonical when clicked geo redirects the user to his country version, so if an Australian accesses domain.com/eu/ and clicks on a canonical link from chrome extension he will be redirected to domain.com/au/ this means that all canonical tag contain 301 linksI asked some experts they said that the canonical link need to be self-referencing for these homepagesBut I have a doubt, the homepage of all these versions carry the same content, so now if I put domain.com/eu/ as a canonical for domain.com/eu i.e. self-referencing then would that not cause a duplicate content issue? What should I do here?

  • Richard Hearne: Can you explain what "clicks on a canonical link from chrome extension" means? I`ve no idea.

    > "Let`s say the homepage is domain.com/eu/ this carries domain.com"

Then the homepage for Google is domain.com.

    > "domain.com ... geo redirects the user to his country version"

That means that there is no page resolving at domain.com, and therefore the canonical on domain.com/eu/ will most likely be ignored, and therefore domain.com/eu/ will most likely be self-canonicalised despite your worst efforts to confuse Google.

    > "... he will be redirected to domain.com/au/ this means that all canonical tag contain 301 links"

I hope very much your doing these geo redirects with 302, right? Do you know what happens if you 301 redirect all US visits to domain.com/us/? Do you know where Googlebot will crawl from?

    > "I asked some experts they said that the canonical link need to be self-referencing for these homepages"

I think they are quite correct. If you want these homepages to appear in Google`s country searches, then they need to self-canonicalise on Google`s side. If Google selects a single version as the canonical for all these EN homepages, then only it would appear in Search results. Is that what you want?

    > "... would that not cause a duplicate content issue?"

What`s the issue exactly? IMHO, you`re trying to avoid a very minor issue by creating a very major issue.

What you should do is put your global homepage on /. Put all your country homepages in subfolders (as you have them). If you really want to redirect users do this with 302, but afford them an easy way to break out of the geo-redirect (they`ll thank you). If you want a better user experience looks into messaging users based on their location/language settings. Self canonicalise all homepages.

    Bonus Tip: look into HREFLANG.

    DOMAIN.COMDomain.com | 404 Error | Domain.comDomain.com | 404 Error | Domain.com
