The risk of changing domain name

Important SEO Question. I have just acquired a .io domain name for one of my tech websites. The website is on the top three Google organic results with the actual .com extension. Would you consider a risk if I make the .io domain as the primary domain to the website? How about a 301 from the current .com domain to the .io domain? The actual .com is a longtail domain while the .io domain is the shortest version of the .com domain. Imagine a domain xyzUSA.com and now is xyz.io.
