Dumb SEO Questions

Split testing on a given keyword

Split testing on a given keyword search eg. "icecream"

If we have a landing page like domain/free-icecream/ for the given keyword search and it has been ranking for quite a while like a year or so in top 3. If I then decide I want to create a new landing page domain/icecream/ to compare with the old one and to see if I can beat the old page ranking. I also dont want to rank with a landing page called domain/free-icecream/ when the keyword search doesnt have the keyword "free"

The question. If the new landing page domain/icecream/ is only a tiny bit better than the old landing page domain/free-icecream/ will it then ever be switched with the new one or will the old landing page stay as the "best"?

I have now been waiting for over a year and the old landing page is still ranking on the given keyword "icecream"

Im quite sure the new landing page is better. Will the new page ever be switched out with the old one even if its only a tiny bit better?

Does anyone have experience with this?
