Should i use a 301 redirect to my home page?

Hi everyone,  

Quick question. I have an ecommerce site and decided to stop selling a certain product line in my store. When it comes to those particular product pages, should i use a 301 redirect to my home page??

  • Tony McCreath: Short answer: no

    It's a bad user experience and it will not help in any SEO efforts. Better just let them 404 and make sure your 404 page has a good message.

    Maybe:

    Update the product line page to explain that you no longer sell those products and suggest a solution for people. Maybe some other products you sell.

    Make that page noindexed or return a 404 status code. This is to keep it out of search results as you no longer want those customers.

    Then 301 redirect the dropped products to that page.

    If some products relate well to another product or category you can redirect them to that.

    This is all about good user experience.
