  • Ben Jablonski: If paginated pages are driving traffic, there isn`t really a point to deindex them.

Best to canonicalize them, but Google is smart enough to understand pagination
  • Michael Martinez: Google has said they may not flow PageRank through pages that use "noindex". They may only do that to fight spam but they were not specific. The pagination is all that drives crawl to deeper parts of most blogs. I prefer to allow it to be indexed in most situations unless there is only 1 author or only 1 category. If the archives are duplicating each other I`ll consolidate them.
  • Richard Hearne: Agree with Michael Martinez above. Another couple of tricks:
    1. You can optimize pagination. There are a few plugins that allow you to set the number of posts included in subpages (e.g. second and subsequent pages), so you can increase this value without affecting the pagination index page that most users might see. It can greatly reduce the click depth to older content.
    2. You can use the category description to add unique, relevant content related to each category to make these pages more relevant overall. With the right treatment your category pages can become more like hub-pages, and can rank well.
  • Mark X Quadros: I love the idea of creating category "hub pages"
