  • Stockbridge Truslow: They should both have the same markup on the same pages.
  • Christopher Shin: Even if the URLs are two different urls? one is http: / / example dot com for the PC version. The mobile version is https: / / m dot example dot com.
  • Richard Hearne: Except there may be some small differences in some properties used if your mobile site is AMPhtml vs. vanilla HTML on desktop. Doesn`t have to be, but you will find that Google required properties do vary depending on flavor of HTML.
  • Stockbridge Truslow: It depends - are the sites the same content - just formatted differently? How are you handling the directing of the traffic? A lot of things come into play here.
  • Richard Hearne: Christopher Shin if your mobile site is set up as the rel=alternative then the values you use for URLs and mainEntityOfPage should reflect the desktop URLs. I suspect Google will grandfather this in if they ever change so that mobile URLs take precedence.
  • Christopher Shin: Stockbridge Truslow More or less similar content. The UX and UI are completely different. Rel=cano is set to each device versions.
  • Christopher Shin: Richard Hearne Rel=alter is also set by device urls with mobile set to subTLD. Ive tested both and they seem to work fine. The problem is most of the info for org markup is same dat for social channels, phone etc. only the urls are different. Couldnt find any resources that covered this topic.
  • Stockbridge Truslow: Same/similar content - but then a canonical pointing to two different pages? No. Canonicals aren`t device aware.

Having two separate sites saying the same thing is tricky. But yes... as Christopher says... the rel=alternate is the right way. Canonicals point to desktop.
