Setting up your homepage URL

Is it actually a problem to set your homepage on URL other than www.domain.com?
Just read this article saying : I do not quite understand the logic behind it, is it actually a problem to set your homepage on URL other than www.domain.com?
Home Page Has a Single URL If your domain is www.foo.com, then your home page should “live” at www.foo.com. It shouldn’t be www.foo.com/index.html www.foo.com/default.aspx www.foo.com/index.php or anything else. Those are all canonically different from www.foo.com. Make sure all links back to the home page are canonically correct. Don’t depend on rel=canonical or 301 redirects for this. Make sure all internal site links point to the same canonical home page address. No site should ever require a 301 redirect from internal links to its own home page.

  • Michael Martinez: It`s confusing and annoying to visitors to see that home page URL (or even a folder URL) change every time they click around the site. If there is proper canonical markup on the page then it`s not supposed to matter for SEO.
  • Mark Munroe: It is not an inherent SEO problem if set up correctly. However, Canonicals can break (and often do), redirects can break as well. Then you can end up with 2 home pages indexed, diluting PageRank, etc. Less moving parts means less potential problems in the future. So I think the advice is good but possibly not explained well enough.
  • Roger Montti: Some people set their home page to be example.com but if you hover over the logo (linked to the home page) sometimes it`s set to a different URL like WWW.example.com or http instead of the https or example.com/index.php

It`s something that some people let happen.

The goal is to be consistent.
