New domain, subfolder or subdomain?

Hey all! Hope your week is going well. I work for a printing company, that is starting a graphic design division (a lot of customers ask us if we can help with design concepts and we don’t currently advertise/promote this).
Was curious on thoughts from the group?
- Should we create a brand new website/domain for this division? i.e. widgetdesign.com
- Or build a subfolder on our existing website? i.e. widgetdesign.com / graphic-design
- Or a subdomain for this division
Thinking through the pros and cons. Not sure if the answer to this is “it depends”?
I believe the age of our current domain is around 25 years . For a new site, we would be starting from scratch, but wondering if that is worth it in the long run?
The current site does have an advantage when it comes to DA/DR authority compared to current local print competitors.
Most of the competitors in the print and graphic design space I’ve found (so far) i.e. have a page on the design services they offer, within their existing sites. Not a separate domain name/website for design services.
Appreciate your time and any thoughts here!!

  • Kristen Hansen Lowrey: Page wi Th in your main site. Then you keep your visitors in one place building more traffic over time. You might only be able to optimise for a few keywords to start but as you add content you can add more.
  • Travis Bailey: Almost certainly stick with the old domain, unless it`s somehow irrevocably in Time Out/ penalized by Google, Bing, et. al. One can always add a page, or pages. The page(s) can, and probably should, be listed in the site`s main navigation.

It might not hurt to add a banner to the main page which features the service(s), if it`s a big offerning. Also it might be a good idea to put together a little email campaign, if the company has been building an email list.
